The short answer is no, there is not a fee to use a Garmin GPS. That is, once you buy a Garmin, there’s no recurring fee to use the device. You plug it in and use it. But if you want certain services, such as traffic or map updates, that go beyond the basic mapping features, you might have to pay a fee.

Your phone is only needed if you want to sync data between the watch and the phone app. You can also sync data between Garmin Connect online and your watch without your phone. Yes, you can use the watch (GPS, Heart Rate Monitor, etc) without a phone and then sync it to the app at a later time.

A couple of smaller more obvious reasons on why you may not be getting GPS signal immediately: If your device is indoors. If you have just finished updating the software (updating the GPS watch helps it perform better) or reset all your data on there.
The Garmin Connect App will allow multiple devices to be concurrently paired and available for syncing. … The app will only connect and sync one device at a time. If multiple devices are capable of activity tracking, you will need to designate one of the devices as your preferred activity tracker (see Related Content ).
